Foot, ankle and heel pain

Pain in the heel, ankle and foot

Heel pain is most often caused by plantar fasciitis, or sometimes known as policeman heel.

Other causes of heel pain can also be:

  • Stress fracture
  • Tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Nerve irritation
  • Bursitis
  • Bony heel spur

It is important to have heel pain properly diagnosed by a professional to distinguish between all the possibilities and determine the underlying source of your heel pain.

Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain.

Causes
There are many causes of plantar fasciitis and in many occasions there are multiple contributing factors rather than just a single one.

Common contributing causes include:
Foot function
Over pronating (rolling in too much/flat footed)
Footwear
Increase in activity or a change in activity
Prolonged periods of standing
Sudden increase in body weight
